Blackjack Myths and Playing Suggestions
|
|
- Blackjack may be a game of luck, but no one is cursed. No one will change your luck. If someone has a run of losing hands, they might be playing with poor blackjack strategy, or they might just be getting bad cards. In either case, it's a matter of chance, not destiny.
- Although the house rules may be the same for games with any number of decks, remember that the less decks in play, the more favorable the game is. The reason for that is the relatively high percentage of blackjacks and successful double-downs around these tables. The casinos are aware of that fact, and usually change the house rules for the games which contain single and double decks to less favorable house rules.
- There is a myth that a new deck of cards is worse for blackjack players than a deck that has been used in the game for a while. The reason given for that is the cards' arrangement in the deck - a new deck has a default card order, which contains clumps of 10-valued cards. The clumps aren't broken up completely in the initial shuffling tracking, which might change the game odds in the favor of the house. Take a tip from blackjack2002.com, it's not true. The decks must be completely random. The shuffling is good enough to break up clumps, and high valued cards are in a player's best interests, not the dealer's.
- It really doesn't matter where around the table you choose to sit. If you play with a basic strategy, you will get the same advantage as the others in the long run. The same goes for "true counters" who change their bets according their count. The 3rd seat from the dealer, though, is considered to have the highest advantage around the blackjack table. It's not true.
- For the card counters, the less people around the blackjack table - the better. That way, the card counters will get to play many hands during a positive count, and increase their profits. When the count is positive, there will be many who will choose to play multiple hands, and a single hand when their count goes negative, so they can improve their winnings during favorable rounds.
- More for card counters - a "deep shuffle" is good for you and the deeper the better, because the deeper the cut goes, it means that there will be fewer cards that aren't dealt. The card counting system relies on counting the entire deck(s), therefore your chances get much better when there are fewer cards left. When playing only basic strategy, though, it doesn't really matter how high or low the cut is.
- If you don't count cards, never take insurance. If at all, take insurance only when you don't have a 10-valued card in your hand, because a card you don't have is one more 10-valued card that could be the dealer's facedown card. A good time to bet on insurance is when you're positive that more than a third of the un-dealt cards are 10-valued. In many of the counting systems, the true count value can actually predetermine the probability that a 10-valued card will appear, so that the players know when to take insurance.
- There are many betting systems for blackjack and online blackjack. When one is on a winning streak, he will usually increase his bet, hoping the good luck will continue. On the other hand, many increase their bets when hitting a losing streak, hoping to recoup their losses if they win once. Others calculate their bets according to their last few hands, and some just go by hunches. Now, here's a little secret - each and every one of these strategies doesn't really work. All you have to do in order to make your strategy effective is to know when the cards are stacked in your favor and use that information properly. That's the principle behind card counting.
- A true count of 1-2 deck games will benefit you much more than the same count for 4+ deck games.
- Don't advise players you don't know. If the player you advised ends up losing his wager, he'll hold a grudge against you and will make sure you know it.
