Online Blackjack News - Supercasino Lobbyists Misjudged British Public
|
|
Harrah's, which was behind Blackpool's attempt to become the location for the now-aborted idea, was among a clutch of Las Vegas operators lobbying in the expectation that the government would sanction a wave of supercasinos.
But opposition to supercasinos, partly fuelled by resentment at the operators' aggressive lobbying tactics, damaged the policy and the pilot location proposed by the government in Manchester was shelved in the summer by Gordon Brown.
Story continues below ↓advertisement Jan Jones, Harrah's vice-president of government relations, said: "We were in part our own worst enemies. Because it was a whole new concept, it scared people. It was too much."
Ms Jones, who as Las Vegas' mayor in the 1990s drove the city's most intensive period of expansion, said Harrah's intended to bid to operate some of the 16 smaller casinos that have survived the wreck of the government's casino policy. The US operator is being bought by a private equity consortium in a $17bn (£8.3bn) leveraged buy-out, the biggest in the industry.
With one eye on the location of the 16 smaller casinos, it embarked Friday on a charm offensive, announcing a £300,000 donation over five years to Help The Aged and launching an advertising campaign promoting its "moral compass" and social responsibility. Supercasino
