Online Blackjack News - Poker Taxation Treads a path toward reulation
|
|
A new approach brings the US closer to taxation instead of banning online poker rooms. Effective March 4th, 2008 a new law will tax tournament winnings by 25 % for all who case more than 5000 thousand dollars. Poker Hobbyists are the people who will find the biggest pinch to their earnings. Should the poker player go deep into the given tournament, where a buy in is between 100 and 550, having a minimum cash pot of 30,000 dollars, giving them the need to pay the 25% on everything they earn.
The way the tax code was written, it directed the basis to a court ruling pertaining to taxes and poker earlier this year. The court ruled that poker is not a game of skill, instead a form of gambling, leaving for chance, the application of tax laws. Although this taxation shows that minimum benefit of the potential of regulation instead of banning, online gambling, this law does not approach the online gaming or virtual poker rooms and their tournaments.
Here is a breakdown of the potential earnings for the government under this new tax law. If an event with a 500 dollar buy in was held, the top 7 finishers would be labile for more than 40 thousand dollars. That would be a tax bonus worth examining further, as an incentive to the government to consider regulation, instead of ban, online gaming.
This is a promise to the tournament poker player that the government is now putting their hand in the pocket of the professionals in the sport. Although this incredibly high tax will prove a difficult payment for any effective and skilled poker player, the tax is promising for establishing a basis for reversal of the UIGEA and similar state laws, as the application becomes noticed and figured into the budget.
