Online Blackjack News - Basic Blackjack Rules

There is a common misconception about blackjack that in order to win, you have to get as close as possible to 21. However, this could not be further from the truth, and it is one of the things that differentiate a good blackjack player from a beginner, or a player that will never be a good player. In fact, the actual goal in blackjack is to beat the dealer. Players who go in to the game in order to get 21 at every round will be in for disaster. Some times a 13 or 14 will win you the game, and at times it is better to stand and see the dealer bust.

The first thing that you have to do is to see how many decks are used in the game. Single deck blackjack is becoming a thing of the past. Most games are dealt from a shoe, which means that the game is either a four or eight deck game. Remember that the more decks are played, your chances of winning drop. You can still win at shoe games, but your goal should be to be play in a single or double deck game. If you are playing online, then ask before you begin the game how many decks are used.

A game of blackjack begins with the dealer handing out two cards to each player in a clockwise fashion, beginning from his left. One card is dealt to each player at a time, with the dealer showing the players one of his cards. This is called the up card. Once the dealing is finished, it is the first player’s turn to begin. The dealer will always be the last to act, thus giving the casino an edge.

When it is your turn, you can do one of several things. You can request a hit, which means asking for another card. You cab stand, which means to stay where you are and pass. You can also double down, meaning that you double your bet and take one last card. You may only do this if you have not already hit. If your two cards match, for example two tens, then you can split them to make two hands, and double your wager.

Each card is worth the number printed on it. The face cards are worth ten, and an Ace is worth 1 or 11-your choice. After all, players take their turn, the dealer turns over the unseen card. Most houses make the dealer stand on 17. If the dealer has less than this number, he or she hits the hand and continues to do so until the count is at least the stand amount or the hand busts. Blackjack is a fun game that's easy to learn and profitable.
