Online Blackjack News - Splitting Cards in Blackjack
|
|
Blackjack is one of the more simple games in the casino, at least in terms of the basic rules and the basic strategy. However, when playing, people often follow strategies that they read about in books, or that they were just told “is right” without knowing what they are doing or why. This in turn may lead to a certain lack of dynamism in the way the game is played. Knowing how to deal with only certain situations is no good in a game such as blackjack, where you must constantly be on your feet in order to play the new situations and new obstacles.
One of the more interesting situations that can be dealt with at the blackjack table is the splitting of the cards. When a player is dealt two cards of matching rank, he (or she, for all you gals) is given the opportunity to “split” them. Many people know of this rule, yet fail to recognize the right time for splitting, and when it is not. Splitting is done only when the advantage is to you, so you need to be aware of this extra edge that you have in order to exploit it.
It would be too lengthy to enumerate all the instances when a split is necessary, only a few examples will have to suffice at this time. You should always be splitting aces or eights, but never split tens or fives. Other hands are dependant upon the dealer's up card. Splitting aces is good, since almost a third of the deck is worth ten pints, making for a powerful 21. Two eights give us sixteen, which is terrible, but splitting them may give us eighteen, which is a little better.
In the same way we should never split a pair of tens, which include all “picture” cards as well. With a 20 you are in a string position to win the hand, so why risk losing two bets when you can win with one strong hand? A pair of fives gives un another interesting split. 5+5 make ten, but when you split them, the most you can get out of them is 15, and then all you can do is hope for the dealer to bust. However, if you keep them both, then you can get a strong 20.
While splitting can be a powerful tool for increasing your edge, re-splitting is even better! Whenever you have the chance to re-split, by all means use that chance.
