Online Blackjack News - Blackjack-Playing Former Mayor of Atlanta Found Guilty of Tax Evasion

Bill Campbell, the former mayor of Atlanta, Georgia, was found guilty of tax evasion charges, but not guilty of racketeering and corrupt payment charges. That latter charges refer to accusations that Campbell accepted bribes in exchange for city contracts. Campbell was also accused of spending the bribe money on blackjack gambling trips to Mississippi River casinos and romantic getaways with women.

Prosecutors claimed that Campbell operated a web of corruption at City Hall during his two terms in office from 1994 to 2002. They also argued that he ordered his subordinates to collect thousands of dollars from contractors who sought to do business in the city. In addition, they said that those payoffs came in the form of over $160,000 dollars in campaign contributions, cash, and home improvement services.

Nevertheless, Campbell's defense attorneys contended that it was not the ex-mayor who bilked city contractors, but his subordinates, who used his name without his permission. The trial lasted seven weeks and included as many as 60 witnesses. The 52-year-old Campbell could get up to nine years in prison.
