Online Blackjack News - Charity Groups in Sacramento Not Permitted To Hold Events With Blackjack And Other Card Games
|
|
No fewer than four Sacramento groups have had to cancel or scale back charity fund raising events in the past few weeks, due to the fact that the state Department of Justice has stated that charity-sponsored gambling events are not permitted, and that only licensed card rooms or tribal casinos are allowed to host "controlled games," such as blackjack or poker.
A number of charity fund-raisers, featuring casino games such as blackjack, have been canceled, as organizers feared that they would be breaking the law if they were to host such events. Organizers of the various charity events were extremely disappointed that they had to cancel, because they estimated that the events would have raised a lot of money.
The increasing popularity of games such as blackjack and poker have caused authorities to become stricter and keep a closer watch on the situation. Many people do not understand why charity casino events are not permitted, as no money can be won by participants. A number of nonprofit groups that were aware of this law for some time appealed to lawmakers to grant them exceptions.
Alberto Torrico, D-Newark, who wrote a bill last year in order to provide exemptions for these organizations, has stated that he sees no problem in non-profit organizations holding events with games such as blackjack, roulette and craps, as long as they are monitored correctly.
