Online Blackjack News - British Backpacker Falls Prey to Blackjack Scam in Malaysia
Twenty-year-old Sam Nolan, a British backpacker sojourning in Malaysia, became the victim of a high-rolling blackjack scam, which almost cost him and his family thousands of pounds. The blackjack scam unfolded after an Malaysian man offered to show Nolan the sites of capital city Kuala Lumpur, but instead, led him into a high-stakes blackjack game with a group of mobsters.
In addition to being pressed at gunpoint for £5,000 (approximately $9,000), Nolan was forced to telephone his parents, beckoning them to wire cash. Nolan's parents were prepared to comply, but British police put a stop the transaction. In the end, Nolan made it to the airport, where the authorities put him on the first flight to the UK.
Blackjack scams seem to be something of a phenomenon in Kuala Lumpur. In late August, Dot-Bingo.com reported on a similar scam in which an attractive woman served to tempt male tourists back to an apartment, where accomplices challenged the victim to a high-stakes game of blackjack. At least thirteen male tourists turned to police after allegedly falling prey to this scheme. In addition, four reports of tourist blackjack scams were recorded by police, already in 2004.
