Online Blackjack News - Blackjack – which soft hand to double and which to hit?
|
|
When a player makes his first steps in the blackjack gaming, he normally has already grasped the idea of ‘hitting’ and ‘standing’. A bit later, more advanced concepts of ‘doubling down’ and ‘splitting’ are acquired. At even more advanced stage comes the doubling with ‘soft’ hands like Ace/2 or Ace/7.
Yet, many blackjack players get caught in the handful bunch of baffling instances which are never properly learnt. The underlying reason for this confusion is that doubling of a number of soft hands is not entirely straightforward. Whereas some should be doubled others should not.
When the dealer’s up-card is 4 and the hand options are Ace/2, Ace/5, Ace/7, only A/5 and A/7 should be doubled and A/2 should just be hit. If a player has only five hit cards to make a hand with, then the dealer should have a very weak up-card for the doubling to be successful. The weakest case for the dealer would be to end up with up-card 5 and 6.
What every blackjack player has to ask himself in this case is how many of the hit cards he has that will leave him wanting for another hit. With A/2, there are four hit cards (Ace, deuce, 3 and 4) that leaves the player wishing he could hit again, but should he double that options would not be available
