Online Blackjack News - Blackjack - better Hitting or Standing?
The majority of blackjack players soft double when they should hit and stand instead of soft doubling.
What seems to be the determining factor in making the correct decision is the up card of the dealer and the kicker (the card next to the player’s Ace) of the player. In case the dealer shows 5, or 6, the best move a player can do is to double with any soft hand up to A/7. Soft doubling against a deuce is not a good idea, but if the dealer happens to end up with 3, or 4, to add the kicker to his 3, or 4 might not be a total waste. If the player’s cards total to 9 or more, it is by all means, a great chance to double down. Otherwise, hitting is the most reasonable option.
Basic Blackjack strategy deals with the player’s 7/5/4 against the dealer’s10 instance in a rather straightforward fashion, advising to hit. This is, however, not always the best move. While taking a closer look at this case, it becomes obvious that this is a very close call. Having these cards at your disposal, there are only 48 cards that will make your hand 20 or better and 189 that will bust you. You should, in fact, consider not only the total of your cards but the individual cards that make up your hand. Whenever your 16 is comprised of 4, or 5, it makes sense to stand against the 10, but in the rest of the cases, including A/6/8/A hitting is the better option.
