Online Blackjack News - Doubling or hitting is the Blackjack question!

Frank Scoblete, is one of the best-selling authors on blackjack and other casino games. His books on blackjack, roulette, video poker, craps and slots are starring on the list of most requested books of Ingram and other distributors.

To those who wonder about the basic blackjack strategy of doubling down when a player holds 11 and a dealer holds an Ace, Frank Scoblete will try to elucidate the matter. It is generally not recommended to double in this case.

When the dealer shows an Ace, he asks about insurance and then checks for a blackjack. The game goes on if the dealer does not get the blackjack. This is the point at which it is possible to establish that the dealer is playing either with 9 or a lower denomination card. The player’s 11 has a feasible potential to hit 21, which is why it seems rather reasonable to double down on all the other dealer hands, since the dealer would not fare any better having less than 20.

Frank Scoblete’s advice is to avoid from falling into this illusive trap, when the game incorporates multiple deck cards, since trillions of computer simulations show that it is by hitting and not doubling, that one can rake more money on the hand. Alas, arguing with computers is senseless! However, in a single-deck game it might make sense to double after all.
